I just want to stop working and take it easy. Why do I need Life’s Next Steps?

Taking it easy, puttering around the house, golfing, going on trips and the like are all great for a short period of time. It may be a month or maybe a year but, at some point, people who don’t have more in their lives find themselves bored, lonely, unmotivated and often depressed. This can easily lead to health problems.

Coming to Life’s Next Steps helps you plan and live a rich, meaningful and purposeful life. Your plan can include whatever you value and whatever you really want. That could mean giving back to the community, staying involved in part-time work, hobbies, travel, learning, becoming a scratch golfer… anything you can dream of.

The important thing is that you have a real, practical and doable plan that gives you direction, purpose and clear steps you need to take. Without that plan it’s easy to just let things slide and simply hope that your retirement turns out okay. Life’s Next Steps also gives you the all-important skills and the support of others to help you see your plan through.

I can do this on my own, can’t I?

If you’re very good at self-analysis, goal-setting, assessing opportunities, planning and implementing multi-faceted programs, you might be able to this on your own. But not many of us have all those skills and, even if you do, you probably won’t get around to it. For some reason, planning our own lives is something that’s very easy to put off. If self help really worked, all we would need at difficult times in our lives is to read a book! But we know it doesn’t work that way.

Coming to a Life’s Next Steps Workshop gives you the environment, guidance, tools and encouragement you need to get this done. It makes creating your plan easier, faster and more enjoyable, and your plan will be more in-depth and more effective.

Can’t this wait until after I retire?

One of the most common comments we hear is, “I wish I had done this earlier.” The reason for that is that many things that people identify they really want to do, require preparation. There could be finances that have to be put into place, a language to learn, skills to gain, property to buy or sell, networks to build. Having the time to take care of these things before retirement actually comes along can be a great advantage. You might also develop a plan for a gradual transition into retirement that could start with reducing your workload now.

Should I bring my spouse?

In our experience, couples get huge benefits from Life’s Next Steps. We explain and address the great differences in the retirement goals of men and woman. We find that the best approach is for each spouse to attend a separate workshop. That way, each of you can do your own part in building a “his, hers and our” plan.

There really is a huge gender gap in expectations. But we’ve found that couples who have attended are able to open up, share what they really want, discover common goals, identify areas where they can compromise and agree, and find ways to make each other happy.

Do you help me plan my finances?

Life’s Next Steps helps you create a life plan, not a financial plan. However, knowing your life plan is critical to the effectiveness of your financial plan.

Here’s what many financial advisors have told us, “My clients ask me, ‘Do I have enough to retire?’ I say, ‘Tell me what you want to do when you retire and I’ll be able to tell you if you have enough money.’ The problem is, most people can’t tell me what they want to do.”

Your financial advisor needs to know –

  • Will you continue to work?
  • Where will you live in the near-and longer-term?
  • What activities will you pursue and what will they cost?

All these decisions and more have a huge impact on your income and expenses, and the viability of your financial plan. When you’ve done your life plan with Life’s Next Steps, you will have made important lifestyle decisions that enable you to plan your finances with confidence.
